I’m lucky in that being a research engineer allows me to work on some really interesting projects in all different ways. I get to plan them, research the science behind them, design and create things and equipment, run experiments and do analysis. This means I get to learn lots about develop lots of skill to use in my career. I also love that I get to work on improving the fundamental science behind new technologies that can hopefully improve the world the way works! There are a lot of opportunities for research engineers and being able to combine them with doctorate studies once you’ve graduated university. So if you want to still study towards becoming a ‘Dr’, but also want to combine that with working in some of the most interesting industries out there I can’t recommend it enough. Obviously I’d love to be an astronaut, (who wouldn’t?), but a lot of astronauts nowadays are also scientists that have the opportunity to go and study and run experiments in space so maybe one day I’ll manage to be both! How about you, would you ever want to be an engineer or an astronaut?
