I think the most important thing we can do is make them visible and show them all the opportunities that are out there. Events like this are great at showing that it’s not just a certain type of person that can be an engineer! Going into schools as part of STEM events or careers fairs is a great opportunity to show girls that they too can be engineers and do whatever they want to. There are a lot of views on who engineers are that aren’t really true so doing events, having schools groups go on tours, and things like that can all highlight that. We are also seeing more female role models and leaders in engineering subjects that all show girls the potential that at an engineering career can offer. Currently in STEM subjects about 9% of the workforce are women and that’s a number we need to improve! It is slowly getting better as ideas change and more people see the benefits of an engineering career, but there’s still lots to do. International women in engineering day is on the 23rd of June, (#INWED18), so make sure to keep an eye out on any events that are happening near you that can inspire and motivate more girls to get involved! Is a career in engineering something you’re interested in?
